My Kid Just Said… #45

“”Why does she sound like Darth Vader?”

Children oversimplify things. It’s just what they roll. My son was out with my wife while she ran some errands. A lady came up to them and asked them a question. She must’ve had some previous esophageal cancer or larynx ailment because she had a voice box to communicate. These moments for parents, when our kids speak without filtration, can be cringeworthy.

We only have a few options in the moment. Are we corrective? Are we conciliatory? Who do we address and how?

Though Avara felt embarrassed, the woman didn’t hear anything. At the end of the day it’s our job to render our kids somewhat uninterested in the differences of others. They can be observant without becoming electrified by and fixated on the newness of a person’s uniqueness. And telling them they look like Star Wars villains.

For example.

    “Because she IS Darth Vader!”

My sister uses a wheelchair so I’ve encountered a few of these moments. We always laugh about it afterwards cos the kids are so oblivious and the parents are so embarassed.
But the whole matter-of-fact ‘this is how they roll’ attitude is a really helpful one to apply to the person they are asking about, I reckon.
“How come that lady is in that funny chair?”
“It’s how she gets around So, do you want a juice or frothy milk?”

Of course in my sister’s case we could really say ‘this is how she rolls’ 🙂
