The metaphor just fits. Finn, watching you climb that wall is as close to parenthood as it gets. We watch our children stumble. We entrust their safety, heart and brilliance to others. They come to us when they fail or can’t go on. We revel in their victories, their narrow wins. We want them to go higher and farther from us, but watching it happen still provokes us. I’m proud of you, Finn. You got defeated today but you kept going.
Remember, like I must remind myself, the race is never against others. The real competition is always being at odds with our own fear and self-confidence. Knowing that we’ve placed our feet and strengthened our grip on a path of our own choosing.
I love you.
