humans of New York Kid with Pink Cast

You’ve probably seen a post by Humans of New York before. It’s a remarkable Facebook Page, created by Brandon Stanton, with the snapshots he takes of people lives, photos and mini stories of the strangers he encounters and makes genuine connections with in New York City.

This photo was posted by Humans of New York, but the story that was shared by a commenter stole the show.

Back in October my 7yo Son broke his arm. When the doctor asked him what color cast he wanted, my son proudly pointed to the hot pink one. The Doctor was like are you sure? Pink is a girl color… My little guy looked at the Doc and said “There are no girl colors or boy colors, I want a PINK cast because it’s Breast Cancer Month” The Doc turned red. the Nurse gave my son a kiss and I puffed out like a proud mama Mama bird.

First off, whatever your stance is on genders and those more sophisticated concepts of human existence, look at the fact that here we have a kid, simply seeing color without the complicated knots older humans have tangled up the spectrum into.

Secondly, it’s a KID demonstrating a sharper intellect and greater heart than a grown-up MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL about BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH. Haha! Get schooled, Doc!

As much as this man’s conversational wipe-out was worsened by the fact that he was a doctor, at least it was fortunate that he could prescribe himself a powerful ointment for the seventh-degree burn that boy inflicted on him.

    That’s awesome. Way to go!

Gender roles and whatnot are complicated and I think people generally gravitate toward the extreme of taking them too seriously or thinking they don’t matter at all.

Wherever you fall on the spectrum props to this kid for proudly rocking hot pink for a good cause.
