What It’s Like Being A Parent, Part Nine: Am I Doing It Right?

Parenting is a guessing game, a second-guessing game, filled with ambiguous moments, and despite contrary opinions, there simply isn’t a true manual or roadmap for parenthood. It’s basically all experiential.

That said, there’s a reason so many people write about mother- and fatherhood. So many of us are trying to figure this thing out, or at least avoid big mistakes. So, today, I’d like to introduce you to an aspect of parenthood for me.

It’s the feeling of free-fall while problem-solving. That’s basically how parenting a child feels, at least from my vantage. And even when I’m not stressing about my actions or progress, the ground impact is imminent. It’s coming whether I care about it or not. My children’s future is coming toward me, just the same.

    What if he didn’t solve the Rubik’s cube before he got to the ground?

    And are you telling me I shouldn’t pull the Dad chute until I fix that leaky sink?
