10 Sketches of Dads By Their Kids, Part 1

Posted under NOTEBOOK

It seems like everyone is starting to gear up for Father’s Day, and what better way to get things started than something ridiculously sentimental and fun.

Some dads are sketchy, and by that I mean they have awesome artwork made by their kids. We asked dads for pictures of them sketched, painted or otherwise drawn by their own kids. The results are AMAZE-BALLS-ING. Can we learn something about the way kids see their dads? Let’s check them out! And check out their blogs to see how close the artists’ renderings match their fatherly subjects.

John Willey
Daddy’s In Charge?

Made by John’s son Carter (age 8) of his dad “playing in the backyard.” We’re honestly just wondering if he’s naked in this image.

Doug French
Mr. Doug French

Doug explained, “My older son. The t-shirt explains the tone.” The older ones are always trouble, aren’t they. Does his chin suggest something here to you, too?

Mike Reynolds
Puzzling Posts

As Mike’s daughter, Leah (age 5), said, “The only thing is I don’t want a scratchy beard kiss.” We agree. His beard looks pretty scratchy.

Brent Almond
Designer Daddy

“My son Jon drew when he was 4. It’s me, dressed as Aquaman,” Brent tells us. At least it wasn’t something like, “This is my dad. He’s on fire.” That would be more like our kids.

Bill Peebles
I Hope I Win A Toaster

As Bill put it, “My son Nick drew this a while back as an example of a ‘Mister.’ I remember he said ‘Well, you’re the only Mister I could think of.'” Apparently, Mr. Peebles is also a fan of Pac-man or the letter “C” and has some food on his face.

Michael Kaufman
The Architechnologist

As Kaufman puts it, “We have one hanging in the kitchen. It’s titled ‘Dad When He Had Ha(i)r.'”

John Kinnear
Ask Your Dad

john-kinnear

John’s daughter seems to think he’s a rather circular-faced fellow. And approachable. He’s a very approachable shape.

Derek Bremer
The Unfit Father

“My daughter drew this picture of me about six months ago. I assume it’s what I wound up looking like as a portly M&M,” Bremer beamed. To those of you wondering whether all green M&Ms are female, they are.

Mike Heenan
At-Home Dad Matters

“Dada, I drew your visor but you were bouncing so it’s going up,” explained Mike’s daughter. Apparently, his visor game is quite strong. And what the hell is he holding in his hands?!

Robert Greenwood
Life As Dad

Robert told us, “My 9 yr old drew it. He reminded me that he is not an artist. I think it’s the best looking picture of me.” I know the feeling. Photos aren’t the heart of who we are, but these drawings, in most cases, seem like a closer approximation.

  • This is a great post. I will have to get my kids to do some sketching. (well, they’re always sketching, but not usually pictures of their dear dad.)

  • Simon Coppard says:

in spite of the name being his mothers name, this is a picture my boy drew, of himself, looking at his mum.

There was one somewhere else of the four of us, with everyone being the same shape, with the exception of the adults just having really long legs … wish i could find it!
