Our ALS Ice Bucket + Mentos & Diet Coke Challenge

ALS Ice Bucket + Mentos and Diet Coke Challenge

Of course we had to do it. Aside from being nominated several bazillion times, the ALS ice bucket challenge has evolved explosively into a cultural and global phenomenon that we’ve been delighted to witness.

From celebrities to the people next door, there have been so many inspiring, clever, and not so clever or inspiring (yikes) renditions on this viral phenomenon. It’s become a bit of an honor for us to now take part in something so deeply and widely felt and contributed to.

We join our “voice” now to the chorus to try an add an “interesting” note to the song. To avoid using water and the silly water-waste or drought shaming that’s going on (Just stop showering like us!) and try to go next-level at the same time, we glued several hundred Mentos onto shirts and then used ice-cold Diet Coke to see if we could spontaneously carbonate ourselves for ALS. Watch and see…

Don’t pay too much attention to the criticism out there. “If you click Like on a cause on Facebook, you’re just a slacktivist.” “If you just share or promote it actively, you’re still not doing enough.” “If you donate, you didn’t donate enough and others have flown somewhere by helicopter, held frail hands and lifted heavy objects.” Listen. DO ANYTHING! Try to do MORE, yes, but never stop doing SOMETHING SOMEWHERE!

We donated to asla.org and water.org and recommend you do the same. Everything counts, so just do what you can.

NOW DONATE!

Because there’s someone out there who needs it really desperately badly. And sadly, we’re talking about a LOT of someones. It’ll feel really good.

Seriously. This may be one of the few exceptions to the saying “money can’t buy happiness.” See for yourself. Try it. Donate.

I’m pretty sure you’re supposed to use the white minty mentos. Once I saw your shirts I was like “nope, not gonna work.” Kudos for doing a double donation!

    • Dawn Marie says:

it’s not the type of mentos, but how long they stay in the soda. but I would love to see you wear mento covered socks and climb in a kiddy pool with the soda….

p.s. I was going to say mento covered shorts, but then thought that might be too dangerous ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Andy says:

Yes, this was a major oversight. Also, it wouldn’t have really worked with the right Mentos, they need to be submerged rather than splashed with Diet Coke for it to create the reaction with the soda. It was fun to try, though!

  • Angie says:

    Loved it!!!! Good jo guys!!!

  • Rob says:

Nice job, guys, but since you likely had to take showers after dumping soda on yourselves, how much water did you really save? Unless, of course, you did this in the morning before your regular daily shower. Or maybe you used toilet water to rinse off.

  • Laurie says:

    Yay!! that was awesome!

  • Kate says:

Manufacturing diet coke wastes way more water… good try, though.

    • Charlie says:

HAHAHAHHAAHA. Oh, wait. You weren’t being serious, were you? More water than actual water? SCIENCE!

      • Kate says:

“It takes roughly 20 gallons of water to make a pint of beer, as much as 132 gallons of water to make a 2-liter bottle of soda, and about 500 gallons, including water used to grow, dye and process the cotton, to make a pair of Levi’s stonewashed jeans.”

        • Andy says:

Welp. It was more about not wasting Los Angeles water reserves and also raising awareness for ALS AND people in nations that need clean drinking water. A better use of Diet Coke than drinking by my thinking. ๐Ÿ˜‰

          • Kate says:

For sure, people in California need to be saving water like woah!

    • Kate says:

So, using diet coke wasted more water than a bucket of water. I’m not one of those people crying over spilled water, just trying to raise awareness about things that actually do waste water. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Ariel Isenberg says:

Geez guys. Now you have to shower to get all the soda off and how much water will THAT waste. You guys just don’t care about the environment at all do you?! (Just wanted to see how it would feel to be a troll)
