Tough Little Guy

Since I was a kid I had a problem with the concept of “being tough.” I’m sure some meathead out there will explain to me this is because I was a total wuss and then crush a beer can on his forehead.

As I grew up though, my understanding of “toughness” slowly evolved from the simplicity of a flinty action hero’s physical prowess or pain tolerance to a much broader and personal meaning.

I might scream and bolt from a bee while changing a tire, or scoff at burning the hair off my knuckles while grilling and then weep like a baby at the end of Edward Scissorhands. So this wonderful, illustrated story by Kit Allen particularly resonated with my present concept of “toughness.”
