My Kid Just Said… #46

“When I’m a grandpa and you’re a baby again, I’m going to give you lots of toys.”

My son’s concept of time is… interesting. “Yesterday” could mean two years ago or two minutes ago as far as he’s concerned. It would give Einstein a heart attack and make Carl Sagan poop his pants somewhere on the space-time continuum, were they both still alive. Or are they?

In his honest moment, he was perhaps killing two birds with one stone. Earlier, we’d discussed sharing and gifts. Was he just trying to demonstrate to me his benevolence in hopes that I would give him gifts? Maybe.

In the end, our role as parents is to listen, unequivocally. There are so many opportunities to correct and modify their beliefs. We’ll have plenty of time to help them understand themselves. Sure, many of us want to give them our systems because we want them to succeed. But if our principles hold up, they will naturally adopt them and by our own example, we’ll seal the deal.

Is my son talking about past lives? It’s up to him. I have to ask him to go potty for the seventeenth time.

My son (who will be four next week) says the same thing – he thinks that when he grows up, his dad and I become babies. I’ve corrected him, but not gone too far into the idea of us getting *older* older. I think he likes the idea of his turn to take care of us. (They’re so sweet, aren’t they?)

My son (who will turn 4 in august) asked me that if when he turned 100 y/o and died, if he and I were going to hold hands in heaven. I couldn’t believe that dying could even cross his mind! I tried not to cry and told him that we would always be together and love each other. It broke my heart though, to even think of him dying.

Totally. The timeline on life with these guys feels so small while we’re alive, no matter where we end up.

Sounds like a good way for the kids to be thinking. Seems like at least a few of you are less likely to end up in a home when you cannot take care of yourselves 😉

Very insightful! I hope you’re a good baby and deserve all those gifts!

My five year old daughter’s understanding of time is just as slippery. It does make for some “interesting” conversations.

when i was a small child, i was convinced that, as I was getting older, my mom was going to get younger and one day I would grow up to be HER mom.

My 3 1/2 year old is constantly saying, “When I’m the Mommy and your the 2…” I have to continually break it to him that 1. He will not be the Mommy and 2. That I will not become a baby.

Well, by the time he’s a grandpa, you will probably have a lot in common with a baby…
