Teddy Bear – Scrabble Scribble #5

Scrabble Scribble Comic 5 Gender Bear

It took a simple doozy from my four-year-old the other day to point out that I’ve fully operated under the belief that teddy bears are always dudes for as long as I can remember. I suppose that all stuffed animals are male unless they’ve got a bow, long eyelashes or syrupy shapes embroidered all over it.

This wasn’t a world-shaking revelation, but it was curious to think that we’ve all got our own particular expectations and assumptions.

It’s amazing what you can learn about yourself when you listen to the imagination coming out of your kid.

My new year’s resolution this year is to refer to any entity of indeterminate gender as “she” by default. Because most of us default to “he,” and I’m doing my part for feminism. Also, I smacked my head when I realized I was referring to the bees around our bushes as “he” – when I know that they are all actually female!

  • Tegan says:

My 3.5 year old daughter has a tie-dyed pink, purple, and yellow bear who is a boy, a pink elephant who is a girl (because she has a bow, not because she’s pink), a purple hippo who is neither (or both?) a boy or a girl, and a realistic-looking triceratops named Sophia.

    So…I’ve stopped assuming altogether.

We all know the bear’s name is Ted E. Bear.

As a child my cabbage patch doll had fair skin, brown eyes and dark brown, very short, curly hair. Her name was Elmer. Elmer Fuddpucker. My mother still has Elmer and tells me I can have her when I’m a responsible adult. I’m 32, happily married, own my own home and am raising a child. When do you think I’ll be “grown up” enough to get her back? Lol.

I had a stuffed elephant named Gus-Gus, and I am still not old enough to have it back, either.
