FROM THE ARTIST, CHRIS HALLBECK:
As my children grow up there are lots of rules they have to learn: Don’t throw things in the house. Don’t sit on the table. Don’t put the dog in the toilet.

I’m the main rule enforcer. My recitation of the rules are usually followed by a “That’s not fair!” He’s right. It’s not fair because from his perspective I get to break the rules anytime I please and there are no consequences.

“Daddy, no standing on the couch!”
“I know sweetie but it’s okay, I’m changing a lightbulb.”

“Daddy, no drawing on the walls!”
“Oh it’s okay, I’m measuring to hang these curtains.”

“Daddy, no ice cream until after dinner!”
“Yes, but I really wanted ice cream.”

““

this is not hard. we simply explained that adults get different rules and that when our kids became adults, they would enjoy those same adult rules. this was especially applicable to ice cream at any time we wished. Ya, we used that one a lot.

It’s rough being little. No doubt. You aren’t your own person. People constantly telling you what to do, where to go, what to wear. Ugh! And you NEVER get to do anything you want to do!! The only thing littles don’t understand is that there is some comfort in that. You aren’t responsible for anything or anyone either! You can just go with the flow. Kids are in too big a hurry to grow up these days. Relax, be a kid. Hold on to your childhood as long as you can. Once it’s over, you never get to go back!

    How about this?
“Daddy, you said no bad language.”
“I know sweetie but you annoyed the heck out of me.”
