Skating Through Life

As a younger man, I imagined one day I might become a father. When I dreamed of the man I would one day become, it was always in context of the child I would raise. I haven’t arrived at my destination as a man, and I may never get there, but a child has provided me with a beautiful and intense contrast to the person I once was, and the person I have become…

…someone who forgets to wear his helmet as often as he insists his son wears his.

  • Indeed. When I am REALLY skating, I wear full gear (pads & lid). Though I don’t when ‘commuting’ across campus. But when we are bike commuting, with TheBoy on the back, we’re both lidded up.

SOMEDAY, there will be a mini-ramp in the backyard. For TheBoy of course. 😉

And Charlie, as if HowToBeADad wasn’t cool enough, you just earned mo’ cool points for bein’ a skater Dad!

Nice to know that there are other dads out there with my same dilema. I want my daughter to be safe and make her wear the helmet and I never wear one out on the street. However if I’m in bowl I wear one. Lately I have been wearing RED Cheater pads on my knees and elbows. They are good for street and park skating by being not too bulky. I am planning a 6ft half with an 8ft extension in my back yard so the girls (we are expecting girl two in June) will grow up learning on that. Happy skateboarding!

Children rarely grow to follow the advice their parents offer but almost certainly grow to follow the example their parents set. If you want your children to do something the only sure way is to let them see you do it. No matter what you tell them to do, your children will almost invariably do what they see you do.
