Parenting Is All About Rocking and Rolling

Families Who Rock 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

I can’t enter this contest, but my dad could have, and maybe so could YOU. Let me tell you a story first.

I know I’m weird. I accept that.

I’ve written before about being the son of a radio DJ father and surviving a semi-bohemian upbringing in San Francisco. About the music played on giant speakers in my house. About the cops being called. The inevitable hearing-loss that would come. Hell, when he passed away, my dad’s obituary was written by a Rolling Stone writer. But, in all honesty, I am a student of a music and art and life because of him.

It was rock-n-roll parenting, if you will.

Me and Dad, we sought adventure. His adventures led him all over the world, interviewing thinkers and artists of all kinds. Mine led me to skateboarding, playing in bands, an acting career, and now this digital rag.

As a toddler, I waddled between the towering trunks of giant human trees at the house parties my parents threw. I have video of a famous comedian taking swigs off my bottle, in between making jokes. Needless to say, it was a colorful childhood.

But you probably have some stories of your own, right? Well, today I’m asking all the rocking-est parents to please: RAISE YOUR HANDS.

Hyundai needs help finding “Families Who Rock” — Do you fit the bill?

Watch this to learn more…

Enter the contest here: FAMILIES WHO ROCK!

So, go enter. It’s super easy with rad prizes: a family photo shoot in Rolling Stone, airfare, hotel and attendance at the 55th Grammy Awards.

Did I mention a custom Hyundai Santa Fe for you as well? Oops, yeah that too.

Anyway, rock it out rock-n-roll parents. Because you’re more than a caretaker rocking in a glider and rolling your stroller.

Are you the child of a radio personality who faked his own death on the air to get a day off?

Did you have a parent pick you up from middle school in a towel?

Did your father wear a priest’s outit the first time he met your mother?

Oh, wait. That’s just me.

Show them how you rock.

This post is brought to you by The New Santa Fe from Hyundai. Think your family rocks? Show us by uploading a photo of your family rocking out. Enter now for a chance to win great prizes. Boom!

it’s been a long time since i thought a contest from the internet was worth entering, but this one is!

    • charlie says:

      My sentiments exactly.

    • Jess says:

I totally agree with you on this one. I am NOT one to genuinely think that big time internet contests are A) cool or B) worth it. But this one sort of is…damnit.

  • My husband is in a band… All my kids have guitars…. I have a mandolin, and I broke a tambourine while performing recently. I think we might have an angle πŸ˜‰

  • I am officially team JennyOnTheSpot! Go Jenny!

  • Because we? We are not a family who rocks. We are way too suburban for that πŸ˜‰

  • Tiffany says:

Two drum sets, key board, guitar, amp, tons of percussion instruments and loud kids makes for a very awesome family band….we even have a name that the kids came up with! Rampage! We started our homeschool day like true rockstars, sleeping in, and then jamming first thing after breakfast. It’s definitely not quiet at my house but never a dull moment!

    • Tiffany says:

I must add, it does make it sweeter that we are a blended family. Music makes for some fun family bonding time…Does it count we took our son to a TOOL concert last year?

  • Lynn says:

LOL. Loved the stories about your parents….makes me think about the things we do to our kids. I take them to school in my bathrobe….even stopping to pump gas. He picks them up and JAMS his music really loud and revs the engine, all the while, screaming out the window like a redneck hillbilly for our 17 year old daughter. hahaha! Embarrasses the shit out of her. LOL. Hey, we only get to be parents once and we’re gonna take full advantage of the opportunities that we have right now. Good luck to whomever enters for the car. I just bought a new one, so there’s somebody else out there that needs it worse than I do πŸ™‚

  • Chelsey says:

WE are a family of nerds.

  • I won’t enter the contest because we have a car and I don’t wanna pay the tax on winning that prize. But yeah, our family rocks. My name has already been in Rolling Stone magazine and my face on Top of the Pops, and each of my children has frolicked on stage before one of Mommy & Daddy’s shows. I even breastfed my daughter in a rock club, so there! But that life is retired for us. Now I shiver when my kids talk about wanting a drum set for Christmas. How about a chemistry set instead? πŸ™‚

  • Lynn says:

PS. I will say this….if you ever have one for the best father…I’m in. My guy is 13 years younger than me and has raised my kids for 8 years. He loves them unconditionally and he IS DAD to them. Aaaaand, he’s a young dad so he’s TONS of fun. lol I’m okay. I have my moments, but he’s the bomb. haha.

  • Lynn says:

So are we Chelsey. lol. Gamers and social networking freaks. Our 9 year old son is a Pokemon MASTER and I keep hoping that he never has to battle a little Japanese kid….it will bust his bubble something terrible! lol

  • Christina says:

I don’t think we “rock” but both of us were in band in HS lol.
Would be nice to win though, my car went kaput in May when my baby was only a month old.
    We’ll still enter though.

  • I play a mean iPod. Does that count?

  • the grumbles says:

does it count if Jude thinks he’s in the aquabats? no?

  • Scott and Delilah play the drums together — 3rd and 4th generation respectively. I think that rocks. I mean, it’s definitely not as cool as faking your own death on the air…which…I really need to know more about.

  • Mrs. Jenna says:

I won’t enter the contest because it wouldn’t be fair to everyone else on account of how awesome and rocking we are. We have a subscription to Rolling Stone magazine and I own some CDs, and Abby saw Mastadon in concert. (Even if it was in utero!)

  • Sadly, I don’t think we are the rocking-est family in America–but I did just take my husband and baby2 (currently in utero) to see The Who a few weeks ago. That counts for something, right?

  • I’m totally outing myself on your site. I am a daughter of a Radio DJ who toured with bands. LOL

Jack Straw – Host of “Dead Air” in Tucson. My dad passed away in 2006 but from the nineties on, hosted that radio show. He played his tapes from Grateful Dead concerts he attended from practically their inception. He was an early groupie who turned that “fanship” into a gig touring with them, taping them for various reasons. My dad was a former Military Police, Catholic school raised, dirty hippie. And he was awesome πŸ™‚
