I Wanna WRECK-IT TOO, Ralph.

Posted under NOTEBOOK

There’s a film coming out next month that you should go see. And I did some voiceover on it!

No, besides Christmas in Compton. I mean Wreck-It Ralph!

When I heard I was going to see the movie more than a month before it arrives in theaters, the video game fanatic in me was thrilled. And while I’ll save the full-scale review for next month, I do want to give you some of the inside scoop.

I was lucky enough to do three insane things:
1. Watch the movie in advance of its release on November 2nd, 2012.
2. Talk to the film’s director, Rich Moore, and Producer, Clark Spencer.
3. Enter the inner workings of Disney Animation (more on this in a moment).

1. The Movie

It’s so much fun and definitely bridges the gap between every generation of gamer. The humor John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer and Jane Lynch bring to their roles is icing on the Sugar-Rush cake.

One of my favorite lines from the film:
“Doomsday and Armageddon just had a baby and it is UGLY.”

2. The Director & Producer

Rich, the director of the film, and his Producer, Clark were very conversational and easy to talk with in our interview. You could tell that they both carried a deep love of “retro” video games while evolving into the more modern games. The pair wanted the process to be fun, so they encouraged their actors to have a blast in the recording booth…

…which leads me to our last item.

3. Disney Animation Tour

In visiting Disney animation I’ve realized that I might not be cut out for both cartoon drawing and voice acting. We were instructed how to draw one of the lead characters from Wreck-It Ralph. I failed miserably. But then, they led us to the vocal booth to actually record over dialogue from the movie, in the very same booths used by the actors.

Here’s my attempt:

Now, here’s the actual scene:

Okay. So, I was a bit under-slept and had been overeating so I was off my game, but that’s okay because the actors hired in this movie did a great job… without my “help.” So, while I technically wasn’t IN IT, I did do some voiceover work “on it.” I speak legalese.

Finally, like any good dad, I have presents for you from my trip, kids!

I’d like to offer two t-shirts to the person who posts the best* comment below about their favorite video game, from childhood to adult. The t-shirts can be either one male and one female, or one of each sex, in the size of your choice.

Best,
Charlie

Disclosure: This post was written as press coverage of Disney Animation’s Wreck-It Ralph. We aren’t press, nor can we even spell. Disney provided accommodations and covered associated expenses but all the lame opinions expressed here are my own. Unless I am an 8-bit video game character. Then they are a Pacman’s. I did not get PAID for this even though I am broke. But my will isn’t broke-n. See what I did there?

  • Steve says:

Super Pong—would you like to play tennis or doubles tennis? Oh wait, that’s hockey.

  • Fraser Tamaki says:

Zelda (the original NES version). Loved that game and that console for many reasons. Really though I remember sitting there playing the game with my father. I’ve played the other versions but its never quite been the same.

  • I am so excited about Wreck-It Ralph and although I will be seeing it in advance next week, I am insanely jealous upon watching you in the voiceover clip. Pure Awesomeness!

As for my video game memory, there is one thing that has stuck with me since I was a small boy and sometimes haunts my dreams. I present you with this:

    Up-Up-Down-Down-Left-Right-Left-Right B, A, Start.

It is a toss up between Super Mario Bros. 3 and Neverwinter Nights for the video game that I put the most hours into. I loved them both to similar extremes in different eras of my life.

  • Jenn says:

My kids cannot wait to see Wreck It Ralph! Anytime they see a commercial, poster, ANYTHING, the chaos begins!

Reminds me of the chaos of my brothers and I challenging each other to Duck Hunt as kids! Of course it always ended with a “gun fight” between us! But then again, what kid didn’t have gun fights with the nintendo guns, whether the game was running or not! πŸ™‚

trying to shoot the dopey dog on duck hunt instead of the ducks. he’s such a noob.

  • Sarah says:

Ah! I can’t wait to see this!

  • Joanne says:

I didn’t have a console until the SNES days, but I’m sure the amount of money spent playing Bubble Bobble on the arcade machine could’ve bought me enough candy for the sugar rush of the century!

    1. I have a *somewhat* rare game. Earthbound. And I keep that sucker in a safe in my closet. No lie.

    2. I’d like to think my husband realized I was “the one” when we were talking on the phone once and I recognized the sounds of Street Fighter in the background.

  • Kippie says:

I got started with the original NES. Now I’m a 34-year-old mom of preschoolers, and I like to log as much time as I can playing the LEGO games (Star Wars, Batman, Harry Potter) after everyone else is in bed.

  • Karen says:

This is on our list to see when it comes out.

  • Beatriz Brown says:

Growing up I was not allowed to play video games. But when I was in 11th grade I was introduced to Gun Bound! Awesome game that I got addicted to (that’s when I understood why my mom didn’t like video games). Then I was introduced to Counter Strike, sexiest game a man can play hands down. I meet my husband because of that game! After that I started playing World of Warcraft and totally geared my mage (alliance thank you very much). I don’t play anymore sadly because I don’t have time to raise 3 kids, homeschool one of them and coupon all at the same time. Well, no I do have time I just choose to asleep now instead of raid. Anyways, not to showoff or anything but my mage was epic. She was (up to a few months ago) fully geared for pve and I was AWESOME at pvp. My husband plays LoL and fighting games on his XBox and of course Counter Strike because he is a sexy beast. πŸ˜‰ I love shooting games, but WoW will always be my favorite!

  • Kim Q says:

The only games I remember really loving as a kid were from Atari (Berzerk- loved me some Berzerk, Joust, Jungle Hunt, and Missile Command were favorites). My brothers and I would get into “wars” over the games and battle til the death, or until mom told us it was time to turn it off.

Once Nintendo came out, I did enjoy some Super Mario Brothers. That is where my video game days were put to rest. Unless Angry Birds counts?

  • Megan says:

My brother is 7 years older then me so naturally he was my idol. I grew up a huge wrestling, WWF fan. We would play wrestling games amongst others on his playstation. For main event matches we would put on the entrance music on the stereo blasted and dress up as our wrestlers and do our entrances in real life. Videos games often turned into real wrestling matches where I was always the Undertaker or Shawn Michaels.

  • Ceri says:

Does the Oregon Trail on the Apple IIE count? I grew up in a house full of girls so we did not have any video game system at home. My fav part of that game? Giving the names of your “virtual” family the names of your real family, and seeing it say “Sasha has died of dysentery” Lets just say I had a love/hate relationship with my siblings. πŸ™‚ Now what is my favorite? Watching my husband and 5 year old dance with the Wii to Michael Jackson’s Ghosts song. Awesome!

Oh and WOW That was SO cool that you got to do that, we can’t wait for Wreck It Ralph too!

  • Terri says:

I started off writing my own games in DOS on an Apple in 1980. I moved up to the Apple IIE in 1982. After 2 hours of coding, I could get a bit-mapped rocket to fly at an angle across the sky! Woot!!! I had an Atari 2600, with PacMan, Ms. PacMan, and the clowns-bursting-balloons game until I went off to college…and majored in computer science. Way less fun than chasing pellets and hiding from ghosts.

  • Cara Justus says:

Super Mario Brothers was always my favorite! However… I specifically remember sneaking and playing Mario Paint in the middle of the night as a kid! Such a rebel…

  • Amanda says:

Classic Atari was the best. I used to play a bunch of games, but I remember ET the best, mostly because half of the game is falling in the stupid holes and having to levitate out, which I had a hard time doing. And why can the scientist and the FBI guy walk right over the holes, but ET can’t? Is it bad that the best and worst memory I have of my first video gaming experience is ET falling in the holes? Thank god games have gotten better!!

Cant wait for this movie!!! believe hubby and i will see it on oyr anniversary πŸ™‚

I remember playing The Legend of Zelda growing up. I loved ping trough the towns and visiting the ships an playing the games (rupee dig, anyone?) I could even kick some knight booty in the deserts, but once it came to the bosses I’d screech and throw the controller at my brother. He’d take care of the big bosses for me. We were a force not to be reckoned with. πŸ™‚

Nowadays hubby and I play all kinds of games on the emulator on the computer. He likes to get me to play Out of this World and laugh when I die. Haha. I do the same with him!

  • Christina says:

My husband and I really want to see this movie, lol. Even though we aren’t that big of fans of the comedians, it is still a must see. πŸ™‚

I wasn’t a gamer before college. My mother had a limited belief in TV (yes, she really did semi doubt its existence…) and I don’t think she knew what games were unless it involved colorful “property” cards or a bunch of letters on a board.

College introduced me to Morrowind – which I actually really enjoyed…played it non-stop. Yup – nerd waiting to be born. I remember doing my 30 minute drives from work to home at midnight and desperately wishing there was a real-life console where I could type in “~Home” and I’d immediately be there. /sigh

Now, with kids, I don’t have much time for my favorite games, but I’ve been playing a lot of Sims 3 – and while working up to delivery day #2, I kept seeing the pregnant sim in labor in my head every time I thought of giving birth “naturally” (i.e. without an epidural). Dear God, I wish it were this easy.

My son & I saw the trailer this weekend and we are both super psyched about it!
It comes out on his 9th b-day & we are truly counting down the days…
My Lil Guy is a gamer thru and thru just like I was when Mario & Zelda originally blew my mind at his age πŸ™‚
Gonna have a blast watching it, I just know it!

  • My favortite video game memory is watching my mom beat all of the teenage boys on PacMan and Centipede. I, however, could not play at all. At the time, I wanted to die of embarrassment. Now I just remember what a cool mom I had.

I now watch my hubby and stepdaughter play all games lego.

The shirt would be for my stepdaughter, she has been talking about “Wreck it Ralph” since the beginning of summer. Long before anyone else knew the movie existed.

Getting a shirt for her would cement my “best stepmother” title.

  • Judy says:

I cant wait to see this!!

Favorite memory- Playing and finishing the original Super Mario bros in every place Ive ever lived. It is now a tradition.
Yes. I do have the original Nintendo system… oh and wait for it…it’s in it’s original box and packing.
*revels in all the ooohhs and ahhhs*
